That’s the latest report from Pro Football Focus, where analyst Mason Cameron has projected that the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs could sign the experienced edge rusher—recently released by the Detroit Lions.
Let’s be honest: the AFC is loaded with top-tier quarterbacks. Mahomes leads the pack, but Burrow, Allen, Stroud, and Lamar are close behind. If Kansas City wants to repeat, applying pressure on those QBs will be essential.
“Adding a seasoned edge rusher like Za’Darius Smith would strengthen the group,” Cameron noted. “Over the past three seasons, Smith has posted a 90.1 PFF pass-rush grade, ranking in the 93rd percentile.”
That’s a standout rating—evidence that Smith has remained productive, even as he moves into the latter stage of his NFL career.
Smith played a key role for the Lions in 2024, especially after Aidan Hutchinson was sidelined by injury. He tallied 4 sacks and 39 pressures in only eight games, giving Detroit’s young defense a steady veteran presence.
But in the end, his $11 million salary proved too steep for Brad Holmes and his front office. With limited cap room and young talent like Josh Paschal and Ahmed Hassanein stepping in, Detroit made the tough decision.
Still, that doesn’t rule out a reunion—it just hasn’t been seriously discussed as of now.
Here’s the reality: the Lions still have a notable need at EDGE behind Hutchinson. Marcus Davenport hasn’t stayed healthy, and the current depth chart lacks consistent, proven options.
So if Smith ends up thriving with a title contender like the Chiefs—while Detroit struggles to generate pressure—it’s fair to question if the Lions moved on too soon.
